Building an effective asset management website

Your website is often the first stop for potential investors.

Making the right first impression is essential.

At a minimum, your website should:

    • Guide users to the most important and relevant information
    • Clearly articulate what makes you different from your competitors
    • Demonstrate to investors why your offering is a good fit for them
    • Feature regular new content (news, insights etc.) to drive traffic
    • Provide a user-friendly experience

But building an effective website for private equity firms, hedge fund managers and other alternative asset managers is not easy.

Many firms underestimate the planning involved or rush the process.

This often leads to delays, additional costs, or websites that miss the mark.

That’s why we’ve created a 10-step guide for building an effective asset management website.

It gives you a step-by-step framework for planning, developing, and launching a site that reflects your firm’s strengths.

But before you get started on your website, what do you need to do to consider?

Preparing for a website project

See where you’re going wrong

Before starting your website, it’s important to understand where your current website is failing.

With websites often victim to subjective opinions, this can be difficult:

  • “The description of the investment strategy is confusing.”
  • “I found it difficult to find information about the team.”
  • “The website doesn’t look as good on mobile.”

It’s not always obvious how to address these types of comments.

That’s why we developed a tool that delivers an objective assessment: WebSCAN.

WebSCAN highlights potential areas of improvement across five categories:

  • Readability
  • User journey
  • User experience
  • Updates frequency
  • Design function and efficiency

We score a variety of factors that contribute to these categories, giving you a better understanding of where to focus your efforts.

Work out what support you will need

It’s also important to understand where you will need support and how to choose the right partner.

This depends heavily on the resources and expertise you already have:

  • Highly resourced teams: If your firm has a full in-house marketing team (writers, designers, project managers), you can drive much of the process yourself. You might only need external help for coding or technical development.
  • Moderately resourced teams: If you have partial marketing support and lack design or development expertise, consider partnering with an agency. They can create wireframes, build prototypes, and deliver the technical build while your firm leads on messaging.
  • Limited teams: If you have little in-house specialist marketing expertise, a full-service partner is often the best choice. They will lead the entire process, handling everything from content production, design and ongoing site maintenance.

Once you work out which areas to improve and the level of support you need, you are ready to start building your website.
