Sebastian Mallaby awarded Apex Group Financial Markets Book of the Year

The inaugural Apex Group Financial Markets Book of the Year Award was officially announced at Apex Invest Middle East in Abu Dhabi on November 25, 2025, celebrating excellence in financial writing.

The award, sponsored by Apex Group in partnership with Global Custodian, celebrates the pioneering minds driving financial markets forward.

In a competitive field featuring works by authors including Elizabeth Zalman and Jerry Neumann, William Bernstein, Chris Burniske and Jack Tatar, Alejandro Cremades, and David F. Swensen, the judging panel selected Sebastian Mallaby as the inaugural recipient of this prestigious honour. Mallaby’s influential bestseller, More Money Than God: Hedge Funds and the Making of a New Elite, was recognised for its enduring impact and its illuminating exploration of the hedge fund industry - a typically opaque yet highly influential sector within global finance.

The selection was made by a panel of global leaders in finance, who praised Mallaby for his rigorous research and his book’s pivotal role in enhancing public understanding of hedge funds and their role in shaping today’s financial markets.

Dr Bhaskar Dasgupta, Apex Group’s Chairman of the Board (Middle East and India) shared,

"We are delighted to recognise Sebastian Mallaby as the winner for his outstanding work, More Money Than God: Hedge Funds and the Making of a New Elite. This book represents a remarkable achievement, offering exemplary storytelling in financial literature, and is truly a class apart.”

Looking ahead, Mallaby revealed that he is exploring new themes for his future work, particularly in the domain of quantitative and algorithmic trading, areas that have transformed the economics of hedge funds. His next major release, scheduled for 2026, will focus on artificial intelligence and the evolution of Google’s DeepMind, reflecting his ongoing interest in technological innovation and decision-making.

The introduction of the Financial Markets Book of the Year provided a significant highlight at Apex Invest Middle East, an event that convened allocators, managers, and market leaders from throughout the region. The strong interest in the award reflects the sector’s demand for rigorous and insightful financial literature, suggesting that this marks the beginning of a series of forthcoming book recognitions.
